Idcloak technology released their Best Web Proxy service at the right time. The recent NSA whistleblower controversy with Edward Snowden informing the American public that the government is spying on them and collecting the information in massive warehoused computers has been seen as a threat to privacy and rights. The idcloak Technology offers cheap private proxies that act as a buffer effectively facilitating anonymity for anyone who uses it.
The user’s computer sends a request to surf the web through another computer (the proxy) to avoid having their IP address, which reveals the specific computer, the location of the computer and the country of origin to any website it visits. While using the Best Web Proxy service is effective in masking a user’s identity, sometimes the service is used to create a work-around for censorship, or blocked web pages.
Since the IP address identifies so much information about the user, some countries governments are able to block their access to certain websites. Proxies have been used in the recent controversy where citizens in Iran were denied access to Google, YouTube and other sites ostensibly because of an offensive video on the streaming video site. In reality, it is the Western ideologies and news of the Iranian elections that the government has demonstrated an animosity toward. Iranian internet users (less than half of the population can even access the internet) used proxies to get around their government’s blockages and were able to get access to the information they desired. This led to the unrest after the last presidential election where Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory was called into question.
But it isn’t just the noble skirting of censorship’s stranglehold by governments that proxies help people cope with. They are also used to get around blockages in the workplace. Some companies forbid employees to access social media sites, or personal email accounts while at work. Devious employees can access the proxy, which uses a different IP address and use a hotspot to access those sites without being detected.
Some uses of a proxy are just for the convenience of the user. For example, sites like Hulu and some of the websites of television channels located in the Unites States have a limited licensing agreement that forbids them from showing episodes overseas. Residents of the UK can access those shows on Hulu through the use of a proxy server based in the US. In the same way, US residents wishing to see episodes of shows on BBC can use a proxy server in the UK to access those shows.
As you can see, the uses for a proxy server are many and benefits the user in terms of both privacy and convenience.
