How Proxy Servers Protect PCs

Posted on: April 10th, 2013

A proxy is a computer that offers its services in lieu of another. It is very much like an alias that writers use when they want to protect their name, or a pen name. It serves many different purposes, including as a tool for forwarding email, accessing a computer and monitoring it, serving as a tool for identity protection, and performing firewall actions on various PCs. Many companies take advantage of proxy servers to help protect their computers from access by third parties. They can also use a proxy server to help prevent their network from accessing banned or harmful sites. Perhaps the most common use of a proxy server is to allow someone to be on the Internet anonymously.

Anonymity On The Web

By far one of the most common uses for a proxy server is anonymous internet surfing. When using a proxy surfer, typically the browser on a home-based computer will connect to one website, and then two computers that host the endpoints are the client or home computer while the server is the host or the web computer that the home or your PC connects to.

When you send requests or click a keypad on your computer, you are sending information to the website computer or server. The client or server then sends information back to your computer, so you get the information that you need. The web server will release certain information every time this type of transaction happens, including the home client’s IP address, their history and the computer of origin (your computer’s) name.

The information released can be used to track various visits on the website. Many people do not want others to know where they are on the Web, even if that information is deposited into a computer. However, it is necessary for a server to know where you are, or it can’t perform its job duties. A proxy server can contact a web server instead of having your computer directly contact the web server. It allows a web server to receive only the details of your IP address and then it will acquire information you need from the proper web server.

Larger proxies can also prevent too much incoming traffic from connecting to latent machines. This is a much more complex process, but can provide a greater amount of protection.
