While using a proxy server, you can easily use the web without anyone ever knowing you were there. There are different types of proxies however, that can offer slightly different services.
- Forward proxies. These proxies “look out” from private networks onto the web. Typically a computer in a network will send a request to another server asking for something from a web page. However when using a proxy the computer will send its request to the proxy instead and the proxy will verify whether the information requested can be acquired or whether it is from sites that are blocked or banned. If the information is acceptable it will contact the site where the information is held and retrieve it.
- Reverse proxies. These proxies provide advanced firewall services. They do not allow any information into a network until it has verified all of the information and passes it. It will also provide load balancing services.
- Anonymous services. Proxies can also provide anonymity services, by requiring sites to access the proxy server directly for all information and filtering all responses. The proxy will also ban any blocked sites for the computer user or administrator.
