Every day we get calls or requests from our friends and relatives requesting for help in connecting, installing or using a brand new high tech product such as WiFi enabled security locks, security cameras or other security systems. However, the question which always remains unanswered is whether these security products actually help anyone. The issue of digital security is no longer a realm but has become a facet of our daily lives and is something which modern day humans just cannot do without. One of the main advantages of digital security is the mental satisfaction of being in complete control and being able to monitor one’s valuable possessions in real time.
The moment one looks at the number of non computing devices which have been hooked up to the WiFi, it’s easy to understand how technology has changed our lives. In today’s world, our basic equipment such as thermostats, security cameras, smart TV’s, Web Cams have all become WiFi enabled which allow us to monitor our valuables in real time while being miles away. There is no doubting the fact that having home products and security systems connected to the internet does have immense advantages and provides great convenience to the user. However, the growing dependence on high tech gadgets have also made people a lot more prone to crime and hacking in the form of cyber crime. Due to the high tech systems and their growing use, modern day crimes can divulge an individual’s entire life and also bring out information which were considered to be extremely personal.
Thus, while technology may be helping people, it still has its limitations. For example, burglars can simply pick and choose their targets with the help of the internet. They can determine the locations of the most lucrative options with the help of camera feeds, gain access to the home security systems by way of the internet and check whether the homes are occupied or empty by the help of security cameras. Further, these high tech gadgets can also be exploited electronically (via the internet), physically (with the help of cable or USB) or by Social Engineering (tricking users into installing malware).
