Aussie Feds Nab Hacktivist

Posted on: May 3rd, 2013

Aussie Feds Nab HacktivistAccording to the Australian Federal Police, the man at the center of the infamous LulzSec hacking group was arrested Tuesday in Point Claire. His identity has not been revealed, but authorities say he is 24 years old. LulzSec is the group responsible for targeted cyber-attacks on Sony, the CIA, the U.S. Senate and the FBI. Other targets of the group were Visa, MasterCard and PayPal after they stopped allowing people to offer financial support to the WikiLeaks website after the scandal erupted in 2011. For almost two months, LulzSec hackers penetrated the defenses of their targets, on some forcing denial of service attacks and on others leaving malicious code.

Then abruptly, the LulzSec members ceased the attacks and withdrew from their campaign to make political statements through hacking. In March of 2012, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested several members of LulzSec and another hacker group calling itself Anonymous. The leader of Anonymous, Hector Xavier Mosegur aka Sabu aided law enforcement in locating and naming the other members of his group. The Anonymous group gained notoriety for wearing the Guy Fawkes masks in public and using the image of the anti-government mask to promote their hacking of major websites in support of people in the Middle East and for the Arab Spring.
