As Email Becomes Less Private Congress Draws More Attention

Posted on: April 7th, 2013

CongressA new Congressional bill with the intent of monitoring consumer emails is drawing a lot of attention from consumers. The goal? To help regulate government and law enforcement access to email. The intent? To prevent hackers from getting into databases and threatening national security. But what does that have to do with your email you ask? Exactly.

Email And Privacy

Consumers have long safeguarded their democratic freedoms, including their rights to privacy. There has been a lot of press recently however, about cyberattacks and the risk that cyberattacks pose to the federal government and corporations within the United States. One solution that lawmakers have come up with is a bill that will allow authorities to monitor emails to detect whether email communications may be used by hackers to access corporate or government databases. What does that have to do with you? Well it could be that a hacker sends you an email with a link that contains a code that will help someone get into a government database.

Let’s say that you forward that email to Jane Suzy, who thinks it is cute, and forwards it to her Aunt Polly, who works for the Postal Service, who forwards it to Bill, who works for the State Department. That could end up getting into a congressional database. That’s not all. That could end up being considered a terrorism threat, or more. It goes something like that.

This is one reason the government is proposing government legislation that would allow agents to monitor email conversations, generally speaking. Actually, the government doesn’t want to legislate or monitor individual communications. It is looking to monitor emails as a whole, to protect communications generally. But still, lawmakers and citizens will at some point, likely be up in a roar about things.

Generally speaking however, the goal is to keep people, and the citizens of the country, as well as their property and corporations, safe. One way to do this is to help moderate communications to see what it is hackers are up to. It sounds a bit however, like what hackers are doing. Monitoring communications, to see who is doing what, and the like.

In the war on cybercrime, it is often hard to determine who exactly the good guy is, and who is the bad guy. In the end however, someone will have to come out on top. Let’s just hope the real good guy wins.

Make Your Email Communication Private Using Proxy Servers

Of course, there is always a solution for anyone that wants to keep their information private. This involves the use of a private proxy service. A proxy can help you manage your email and other communications on the web, while still maintaining your anonymity. A proxy will act as an intermediary, allowing you to surf the web, to access files and information, and to perform other tasks using an alternative Identification. The proxy identification is what is used rather than the true ID of your computer. In this way, you are still able to surf and keep yourself safe, and your identity protected from would-be hackers or other unscrupulous people. So do not panic or have fears that you will have no security on the net. The proxy server still provides ample protection to suit your needs.
