In today’s internet marketplace, where users often have multiple email addresses and websites, the idea of having a single internet identity and password to manage them all sounds less troubling. Managing too many passwords and identifications can become mind boggling over time.
Managing Multiple Domains and Passwords – Security Snafus
Yet, according to internet specialists, having a single internet identification, or worse, a single password, can compromise security. Many users today have a minimum of two to four or more IDs and even more passwords. These may range from work passwords and IDs to home passwords. These may be for iTunes, company identification, for banking, for purchases from Amazon.com, and for personal domain management and internet web browsers.
Some e-mail hosts have offered users the option of using a single internet ID to manage all of their passwords. While this may be tempting, and may at first seem to reduce the chaos of logging onto the Web, it may not be that good of an idea. Why?
Hackers want nothing more than for internet users to have a single ID and password. If someone has one ID, once a hacker identifies their singular ID, they can crack into a user’s information… all of their information. Let’s say for example you use one password or login identification for all of your information. It may be the same for your work and your personal information. You might use the same password for social networking as you do for banking. If for some unlucky reason a hacker gets hold of your information, or busts your password for your social networking, then there is no reason they can’t also access your banking information. That’s not something that you want to happen!
Separation of Work and Personal Internet Information
The industry has often gone into a mode of let’s do a one-size-fits-all package for consumers. While this may fit the fast and furious type of mindset most consumers have, ultimately it is not the best idea for security purposes. At the very minimum, most consumers and corporations should stick with at least at two step and two passwords or login IDs. Work and personal information should always be kept separate.
If you don’t already have separate passwords for your work and personal information, separate them now. There is no reason you can’t write this information down, and update it periodically. This is the safest way to keep your information secure anyway.
Using A Proxy Server For Enhanced Security
Another way to create multiple identities without having anyone detect them is via use of a proxy server. A proxy server is simply a unique server that allows you to access other computers by connecting through the proxy rather than through your computer, so your identity is masked. Information is passed first through the proxy, which may verify the information, and then request the file or web page you need from other sources. Proxies basically act as a stand in, offering the opportunity for you to have more than one identity while improving security at the same time.
