The US-CERTS Readiness Team’s Continuing Fight To Deliver Enhanced Cyber Security

Posted on: February 20th, 2013

U.S. Department of Homeland SecurityThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security is consistently working to improve cyber security and information sharing throughout the U.S. and abroad. Consistent and continuing threats to cyber security, including to major corporations and businesses, has caused the Security Team to take corrective action to secure U.S. business infrastructure.

The Department of Homeland Security has created the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team or US-CERT, whose goals include leading the effort to improve security throughout the nation. The US-CERT will work to improve information sharing, and protect U.S. agencies and corporations from cyber risks, while also working to protect the cyber rights of U.S. citizens.

How The U.S. CERT Will Work To Fulfill Its Mission

The US-CERT team will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide enhanced security to government agencies, corporations and other agents. This goal of the organization includes providing technical assistance and providing operational assistance to consumers. The agency responds to security threats and breaches, and provides educational information regarding new security breaches and threats.

The US-CERT also provides threat information through various databases including the National Cyber Awareness System or NCAS and operates a database that describes in greater detail information about cyber vulnerabilities that organizations and individuals have access to.

Corporations and individuals may work in conjunction with the US-CERT to report breaches in security and software vulnerabilities. There are over 250 organizations currently working with the US-CERT to help alert the government to security breaches and help improve the overall security of data systems throughout the U.S.

The goals of the US-CERT also include preventing disclosure of all information considered proprietary to established agencies within the private sector of the US.

Why The US-CERT Is Important

In recent years the growing threat of cyberattacks has resulted in a need for improved security measures throughout the US. Agencies are working to improve encryption and password security. However other measures are necessary to improve the security of data systems and the integrity of data preserved in computer systems throughout the US. The US-CERT team is one example of improved measures the government is taking to ensure the integrity and monitor the integrity of data preserved in computer systems throughout the US.

There are many partners working with this team including academic institutions, federal organizations, private business owners and other agencies to ensure that data integrity continues throughout the US in response to the growing threat of cyberattacks.
