As technology advances, internet security is of one of the main concerns if the recent cyberattacks are anything to go by. In fact, almost all the major companies and players in the computer and internet industry are facing dedicated attacks from hackers targeting the vulnerabilities in the software and popular websites. Both Facebook and Twitter have recently reported hackers’ attacks not to mention Burger King and New York Times.
With such sophisticated attacks, most people thought that software and web developers would work extra hard to ensure security. It was therefore shocking when Cupertino-based technology powerhouse; Apple came out recently and admitted that a malware had infected some of their computers. Apple Inc is one of the most respected computer companies` in the world in terms of quality and security of their gadgets and software.
In explaining the nature of the cyberattack, the company said that the malware was spread via a developer’s online forum and that it took advantage of a security vulnerability in Java Software (from Oracle Corporation) to access some of their computers.
According to the New York Times, the site went by the name “iPhonedevsdk”. As in the case of other recently reported high profile attacks, Apple is yet to explain the source of the malware, and what the hackers did once they got access to their employees’ computers. They, however, insist that their security is still intact and that none of their data was taken or interfered during the attack. They also released a software update for Mac Pro users to help fix the software vulnerability.
Government agencies put the hacking incidents at about 48,000, underscoring the interest hackers have in stealing intellectual properties. Bloomberg reports that some of these hackers may be from Eastern Europe where they can easily sell the stolen intellectual property illegally.
