Google Sets Its Sights On Compute Engine Services

Posted on: June 8th, 2013

Google Sets Its Sights On Compute Engine ServicesGoogle is finally done wading around the storage infrastructure systems and raw computing and is finally opening its doors towards Compute engine services. The new Compute engine service of Google should easily compete with the likes of Amazon EC2, Rackspace Cloud and Microsoft Azure Compute according to Urs Holzle, the senior vice president of technical infrastructure at Google. The most important feature in the Google Compute engine service is a radical shift in pricing which seems to be an extremely sensible move. Google shall now charge by the minute with a minimum billing of 10 minutes. The Compute engine services are also moving towards shared core instances which are supposed to boast of a consistent performance. Finally, another major change which has been announced is that Google shall also offer 10TB of storage. This price war which Google has launched with Amazon is going to be classic and great fun to watch, especially for the customers.

According to Sean Gallagher, Google is now targeting to get more and more applications and data onto its servers. Thus, all the above mentioned changes are targeted to make the services offered by Google much more competitive in terms of pricing and quality and also bring them in direct competition with the top public cloud infrastructure providing services. The Google Cloud Datastore is a NoSQL which is in direct competition to the Amazon S3 and also ensures high availability. Holzle states that the Cloud Datastore serves more than 4.5 trillion transactions each month.

Further, Google also announced the addition of the support for the PHP language and programming after repeated requests for the same. The Google App Engine  already supports Java, Go and Python and the fact that Google is adding the PHP support before other languages such as Node.js and Ruby shows the significance of the PHP language. The main reason for this popularity of the PHP is simply the sheer number of users who know how to run and use it.

While Google enjoys an enviable position in the Iaas markets, their road ahead seems to be extremely steep. Moreover, a lot of effort needs to be put in by Google to make it the number one choice for all enterprises. One of the biggest drawbacks is that Google is yet to open a marketplace which boasts of services such as the AWS. Moreover, the Google App Engine faces multiple service disruptions and the stiff competition from AWS along with its slashing of prices do not help matters.

Moreover, according to experts, if one deducts the gigantic success of the consumer space, the cloud business offered by Google is simply a niche. It is also said that Google needs to worry more about Microsoft rather than Amazon as Microsoft is predicted to be the next giant of cloud computing. Google is way behind than most of its direct competitors on this front. The main advantage with Microsoft enjoys is that the Microsoft Azure supports almost everything such as .net, Ruby, PHP, Djangho and Hadoop as well, something which Google simply cannot boast of.
