Pakistani Block On Youtube Stimulates Proxy Sales

Posted on: September 2nd, 2013

Pakistani Block on YouTube Stimulates Proxy SalesIn Islamabad, Pakistan citizens are prevented from accessing Google and YouTube by the government. In fact, there are a lot of websites that the Muslim run government blocks. The reason given by the Pakistani government for the blockade is the controversial video uploaded in the early summer of 2012 entitled, The Innocence of Muslims. In the movie, Mohammed is depicted as a pedophile and as a homosexual. The content of the video aside for just a moment is that this ban on Western content pre-dates the posting of this video.

Many in Pakistan believe that content on the internet should be available and that the individual should be free to view or not to view whatever they wish. Despite the obvious facts that the video and the reasons for the block just don’t quite align, and the desire of Pakistanis to have the freedom to choose what they see, Pakistan has agreed to unblock YouTube as soon as blasphemous content is removed. (re: That video.)

The problem with this is that there is far more than just the one video that purports to ‘blaspheme’ Mohammed. It’s a source of concern to many Pakistanis because it represents a type of censorship that they have grown tired of. The government’s failure to act on this and actually follow through with their promise will never come to pass some fear. The problem is that a lot of objectionable content is allowed to be posted from other countries because other countries grant their citizens the right to choose what they watch.

Of course, the good news for Pakistanis and consequently the bad news for the government is the anonymous proxy list. It is a list of proxy servers that Pakistanis can use to get around the blocks on banned sites. A proxy is a service that hides the ip address of the user, which effectively moves around the block by ‘pretending’ that the user is from the country that the proxy is based in.

Some Pakistani employees in various locations are accessing these paid proxy services to view YouTube videos and content that their government deems too ‘offensive’ for them to see. In fighting this problem, the common reasons given involve the potential for accessing a proxy to cause a data breach in the company’s computers. In cases of government workers using proxies, it could cause a breach of Pakistan’s national security.

Cyber Criminals use proxy servers in both technologically advanced countries and some undeveloped countries to commit identity theft, fraud and in attempts at phishing for people’s personal information.
