Configuring Internet Explorer Security

Posted on: July 16th, 2013

Configuring Internet Explorer SecurityWith the issue of identity theft becoming more and more a public problem internet security has become an issue for anyone with internet access. While Apple brags about their security measures, yes, they have been hacked several times, most internet access is done through Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. As a result of a larger percentage of people using IE to access the internet, the IE security settings have become tougher with each new version that has been released. Malicious ActiveX or Java based viruses or malware infested sites can infect a users’ computer and cause serious problems for the user. IE allows users to classify the sites they visit and configure their Explorer settings for websites that are in different ‘zones’.

For the uninitiated, there are four different ‘zones’ that IE classifies site pages. These include: Trusted, Restricted, Internet/Intranet and Local. Trusted sites are those that you are prompted to tell your computer that you trust the material found on that site. This allows you to download or run files found on those sites because you are familiar with those sites. The security setting for Trusted zone sites is ‘Low’.

Restricted sites are those that you don’t trust, the default setting for restricted sites is ‘High’, all cookies and potential malware from sites assigned in this zone are blocked. The remaining two zones are internet and local, the security setting for this zone is determined by the user and can be configured to reflect the needs of the user.

To configure IE security for your computer, open up the IE window and click on the Tools button on the top menu bar. When the menu drops down, locate the “Internet Options” and click on it. This will open up the Internet Options window, locate the Security tab and click on that. At this point, you can either leave the zones and their security settings at the default or choose the setting for each zone.

If you aren’t sure which settings to use, choose medium for the majority of your web surfing. In the case of the “High” setting, cookies will be blocked as will most malicious code. Of course, don’t let these settings give you a false sense of security, you will still need to have a reliable up-to-date antivirus program as well.
