Does Quantum Computing Run Lixux As Well?

Posted on: June 30th, 2013

Does Quantum Computing Run Lixux As WellOne of the most talked about news is that the Quantum revolution has finally arrived and users can actually buy a Quantum computer for themselves. Though a model was available for quite some time, the latest upgrade offers 512 QuBits instead of the miserly 128 QuBits offered by the previous version. Furthermore, both Google and NASA have already put in their respective orders for the latest Quantum Computers.

At present, there is only one company in the world which supplies quantum computers – D-Wave. Even thought the company has been staying away from the news for quite some time, no one can forget that its previous model could solve problems 3600 times faster than the normal PC’s. One can only guess what the latest models would do.

According to Gordie Rose, the CTO of D-Wave, the operating system of these quantum computers, known as LISP, is hidden from developers and one can only access them with a supplied API. The API is accessible from proprietary as well as open source languages such as MatLab, Java, Python, SQL and C++. Moreover, the host computer which accesses this API can run any flavour of the Linux that it wishes since it is operating system agnostic.

What Gordie’s statements basically mean is that a user can have his/ her very own quantum based computer. Kudos to that. However, to get access to these mythical machines one would have to splash about 10 million quid which is apparently what was being paid for the D-Wave 1.

Reading the post, it can only be imagined how many readers are dreaming about owning a quantum based computer this very moment. However, we would have to wait until the price comes down and who knows when would that be. Christmas, New Years, a few years or generations! We’ll simply have to go back to dreaming until then.
