SpyEye Creator Arrested in Bangkok

Posted on: June 12th, 2013

SpyEye Creator Arrested in BangkokSpyEye was a banking Trojan that allowed thieves to not only steal money from bank accounts, but would also display a fake view of your account so that you wouldn’t see anything wrong until your debit card started getting declined. The creator, and seller, of the SpyEye Trojan, Hamza Bendelladj, who operated under the screen name, Bx1 was arrested in January of 2013 at the airport in Bangkok. On May 2nd, Bx1 was escorted to the United States where he is awaiting trial.

SpyEye changed the appearance of the victim’s online bank account, making it appear as if nothing were amiss. The closely related malware that came along with SpyEye is a form of software known as an ATS, or automated transfer system, this was called the Zeus Trojan. This ATS would silently and invisibly begin transferring money when the user with the infected computer logged on to their bank accounts.

Bendelladj was a member of the underground fraud forum known as Darkode.com. It is a site where fraudsters and scammers chat with each other, sell code meant to hack computers and warn each other of pending investigations or police activity. Entire communities, sometimes rival communities use Darkode.com the same way that many of us use Facebook.  It looks the same and people at times go by this online website.

Bendelladj is facing charges including wire fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy. He created the SpyEye and marketed it online to scammers. Information from 253 different banks was found on the server he operated. If he were to be convicted on all counts; Mr. Bendelladj’s maximum sentence of over 300 years.

The government claims that Bendelladj made millions selling SpyEye, its components as well as all the money he made from using SpyEye himself to empty bank accounts of his victims and people who he got hold of.
