You can never be too safe when using social media websites. These days’ people spend more time surfing Facebook and Twitter than they do watching television or conversing on the phone. Facebook for some is the new social hour. Because so much time is spent surfing and chatting on the Web, it is important you take time to secure time you spend on your computer, so you can enjoy your time and not worry about comprising your information.
Here are some important considerations when spending time chatting and posting with friends and family.
- Make sure younger users are aware of the potential for identity theft on the Internet. More than ever identity thieves are targeting younger users. If children use social media websites, alert them to the dangers of passing on personal information over the Internet. This can become a huge internet security. Make sure all web browsing is private and monitored. Make sure you know who is using the Web when, and who children are talking with and friending.
- Use fraud protection and general internet security measures. Change passwords regularly. Use strong passwords that incorporate a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols so they are hard to crack. Do not use passwords that are easy to break. Write them down and store them in a safe place.
- When you browse social media sites from a public location, make sure that you are using a secure connection. Consider that cookies may be storing the information you are using. Never login to your bank from a public Wi-Fi. This can compromise your security. If you must use banking information on the Web, make sure you use a secure HTTPS session.
- Always invest in the latest anti-virus, anti-malware and other protection services. Update them regularly to get the most from your investment. This is particularly true if you are a regular chat and social media user. Just one virus can result in a system shut down if you do not update your antivirus software regularly. Do a virus screen regularly, or set your virus screen on automatic updates to run while you sleep at night to keep your system secure.
- Do not automatically friend everyone that wants to friend you. Some hackers want to friend people so they can log into their system and acquire information from them. Know who it is that wants to friend you. Be wise and selective.
Remember you can take action to keep your connection and personal information secure on the web.
